A-Level AQA Psychology explores the science of behaviour in greater depth, building on GCSE knowledge and developing advanced analytical and evaluation skills. Students study key topics including social influence, memory, attachment, psychopathology, biopsychology and research methods, alongside optional areas such as relationships, schizophrenia or forensic psychology.

AO1 – Knowledge & Understanding (Detailed and Accurate)
AO1 at A-Level requires precise, well-developed knowledge of theories, studies and concepts. This includes using key terminology correctly and often describing research in depth.
👉 Think: “Can I explain this like an expert?”
Example:
Outlining Stanley Milgram’s obedience study with detailed procedure, findings and conclusions, using accurate terminology such as agentic state and legitimacy of authority.

AO2 – Application (Clear and Relevant)
AO2 involves applying knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios, often requiring you to interpret behaviour and link it explicitly to psychological theory.
👉 Think: “Can I link theory directly to the scenario?”

AO3 – Evaluation (Detailed, Balanced and Analytical)
AO3 at A-Level is where top grades are earned. You must provide well-developed evaluation, including:
- Methodological issues (e.g. validity, reliability)
- Use of evidence and research support
- Debates (e.g. nature vs nurture, reductionism)
- Real-world applications
👉 Think: “Can I critically analyse and reach a judgement?”

Summer Psychology Revision Course (August)
Get ahead this summer with focused, exam-driven support in AQA GCSE & A-Level Psychology. This course is designed to help students consolidate key knowledge, strengthen AO1, AO2 and AO3 exam skills, and build confidence ahead of the next academic year or resits. Sessions cover core topics such as Memory, Social Influence, Attachment and Research Methods, alongside how to structure high-mark answers, avoid common exam mistakes, and apply knowledge effectively.
