Where the Story Began

The idea for 2:17: The Forgotten Truth came to me in an unexpected way.

During a guided meditation, an idea began to emerge — a time, an image and the beginnings of a story that I couldn't quite explain.

I hadn't sat down with the intention of writing a psychological and spiritual thriller. The story seemed to develop gradually as I explored the ideas that had surfaced during that experience.

What began as a moment of meditation eventually became a manuscript, and the manuscript became 2:17: The Forgotten Truth.

For me, that experience is part of what makes the book particularly meaningful. It became an exploration of psychology, spirituality, memory, trauma, consciousness and the mysterious ways in which ideas sometimes emerge.

I didn't know where the idea would lead.

I simply followed it.

The Book

The story follows Daniel Hart, a man whose life is affected by the disappearance of his sister Emily and memories that he has struggled to understand. As the story unfolds, Daniel is forced to question what he remembers, what he has forgotten, and whether some truths can remain buried forever. The book brings together my interest in psychology and spirituality, exploring themes around memory, dreams, consciousness and the search for meaning.

From Dragons' Den to the Story

There is also an unexpected personal connection behind the book. Many years ago, I appeared on the BBC's Dragons' Den with one of my early business ideas. That experience eventually led to my coming into contact with Rachel Elnaugh, one of the original Dragons. Remarkably, while I was writing this new book many years later, Rachel and I unexpectedly came back into contact. The timing struck me as extraordinary. I was writing a story heavily influenced by psychology, spirituality and the idea that apparently unrelated events can sometimes become connected in meaningful ways — and at precisely that time, someone from an important part of my own past reappeared.

I found myself thinking about Carl Jung's theory of synchronicity: the idea that two or more events can be meaningfully connected despite there being no obvious causal relationship between them. Whether such experiences are simply coincidence, the mind finding patterns and meaning, or something more mysterious is open to interpretation. For me, however, the experience became part of the story behind the story.

It reinforced one of the central questions of the book:

What if some of the things that happen in our lives aren't quite as random as they first appear?

2:17 explores the boundaries between psychology and spirituality, memory and reality, coincidence and synchronicity — and asks whether some truths really can remain buried forever.
