Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

I work with people who want to improve their confidence, manage pressure, overcome anxiety and perform at their best. This may include athletes, students, professionals, business owners, performers and anyone facing challenges that are affecting their performance or well-being. My approach is practical, personalised and focused on helping you move forward.

I provide practical, personalised psychological and performance support, drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Together, we explore the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that may be getting in the way, and develop strategies to help you respond more effectively to pressure, anxiety, self-doubt and challenges.

You don't have to struggle to seek psychological support. Perhaps you're facing pressure, self-doubt, anxiety or a setback, or simply want to develop your confidence and perform at your best. Whatever you're working towards, I'm here to help you understand what's getting in the way and take the next step.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a different way forward. Rather than trying to eliminate every difficult thought or uncomfortable feeling, ACT helps you change your relationship with them, reconnect with what matters to you, and take meaningful steps towards the life you want to live.

Imagine being able to experience uncertainty without letting it control your decisions. To notice anxious thoughts without automatically believing them. To stop waiting until you feel completely confident before doing the things that matter.

Through ACT-informed support, you can develop practical skills to:

  • Break free from overthinking and learn to step back from unhelpful thought patterns.
  • Make room for difficult emotions without allowing them to dictate your life.
  • Reconnect with your values and discover what genuinely matters to you.
  • Build psychological flexibility so you can respond to life's challenges more effectively.
  • Take meaningful action even when uncertainty, fear or self-doubt are present.

You don't need to wait until you feel better to start living better.

ACT isn't about pretending everything is fine or forcing yourself to think positively. It's about learning to make space for your experiences while choosing how you want to live.

At Renwick Psychology, I offer ACT-informed support to help you develop a more flexible relationship with your thoughts and feelings, so you can move towards a richer, more meaningful life.

Your thoughts are part of your experience. They don't have to dictate your direction.

Understanding the ACT Hexaflex

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based psychological approach that helps people develop psychological flexibility — the ability to respond more openly to difficult thoughts and feelings while taking action guided by what matters to them.

Rather than trying to eliminate every uncomfortable thought or emotion, ACT encourages us to change how we relate to our inner experiences and build a life that reflects our personal values.

The ACT Hexaflex brings together six interconnected processes that support psychological flexibility.

1. Present Moment — Be Here Now

Learn to pay attention to what is happening in the present, rather than becoming caught up in regrets about the past or worries about the future. Mindful awareness helps us respond more deliberately to the situation in front of us.

2. Values — Know What Matters

Identify the qualities you want to bring to your life and relationships. Values act like a compass, helping you decide what matters and which direction you want to move.

3. Committed Action — Take Meaningful Steps

Take practical, achievable steps guided by your values, even when difficult thoughts, uncomfortable feelings or setbacks arise. Progress is about moving in a meaningful direction, not waiting until you feel ready.

4. Cognitive Defusion — Create Space from Thoughts

Learn to notice thoughts as thoughts, rather than automatically treating them as facts, commands or truths you must follow. Defusion helps you make room for different responses instead of being controlled by the stories your mind tells.

5. Self-as-Context — You Are More Than Your Thoughts

Develop an awareness of the perspective from which you notice your thoughts, emotions, memories and experiences. You are not defined by any single thought, feeling or event; you can observe these experiences without reducing yourself to them.

6. Acceptance — Make Room for Experience

Practise allowing difficult thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations to be present without constantly fighting, suppressing or avoiding them. Acceptance does not mean liking a situation or giving up; it means making room for your experience so you can choose how to respond.

Bringing the Six Processes Together

These six processes are interconnected, not separate steps that must be completed in order. They work together to help you become more aware of your experiences, make room for discomfort, clarify what matters and take meaningful action.

The aim of ACT is not to create a life without difficult feelings. It is to help you build a richer, more meaningful life, even when difficult feelings are part of the journey.

At Renwick Psychology, the Hexaflex provides a useful framework for understanding how ACT can support mindfulness, acceptance, personal growth and values-led living.

How to Book ACT Support

A practical first step towards meaningful change

Taking the first step towards psychological support can feel daunting, but getting started is straightforward.

I offer individual ACT-informed sessions designed to help you understand what is keeping you stuck, develop practical psychological skills and move towards a life that feels more meaningful to you.

Your First Session — £75

Your initial session is an opportunity for us to explore the difficulties you're experiencing, identify what matters most to you and consider how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy could help.

We'll discuss your goals and begin identifying practical strategies you can use in everyday life.

There is no commitment to continue beyond your first session. You can decide whether the approach feels right for you before booking any further appointments.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

For many people, two to three sessions may be enough to develop a clearer understanding of their difficulties, learn some core ACT skills and establish practical ways to move forward.

Everyone is different, however. Some people may benefit from additional sessions, depending on their circumstances, goals and the challenges they are facing.

My approach is focused on helping you develop useful skills and greater independence, rather than committing you to an unnecessarily lengthy programme.

Ready to Get Started?

  1. Get in touch to enquire about an initial appointment.
  2. Book your first session for £75, with no obligation to continue.
  3. Explore your goals together and begin developing practical ACT strategies tailored to your needs.
  4. Decide what happens next based on your needs and whether you feel the approach is right for you.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin. We can start with what's troubling you now and work towards what matters to you.

Take the first step towards a different relationship with your thoughts, feelings and everyday challenges.
