The ACT Deck is a collection of mental health conversation cards based on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The cards are designed to help individuals develop psychological flexibility — the ability to handle difficult thoughts and emotions while continuing to move towards a meaningful and fulfilling life.
Rather than trying to eliminate uncomfortable feelings or “fix” thoughts, ACT teaches people how to respond differently to them. The goal is not to struggle against difficult experiences, but to create space for them while taking actions that align with personal values.
The cards encourage reflection and meaningful conversations around key ACT principles including:
Reflect
Explore thoughts, emotions, experiences, and patterns with greater awareness and understanding.
Accept
Learn how to make space for difficult thoughts and feelings instead of constantly fighting or avoiding them.
Connect
Develop deeper connections with yourself and others through honest conversations and present-moment awareness.
Live Your Values
Identify what truly matters and take meaningful actions towards becoming the person you want to be.
The ACT Deck can be used by:
• Therapists and counsellors
• Mental health professionals
• Coaches and support workers
• Teachers and educators
• Students and young people
• Individuals for self-reflection and personal growth
• Families and group discussions
How can it help?
The ACT Deck may help people:
• Increase self-awareness
• Build emotional resilience
• Develop healthier ways of responding to difficult thoughts
• Improve communication and relationships
• Clarify personal values and goals
• Encourage meaningful action and positive change
The aim of The ACT Deck is simple:
"To help people stop fighting with their thoughts and start building a life guided by what matters most."
Stephen Renwick
The ACT Deck helps individuals pause and reflect on their thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and experiences. Through guided questions and activities, users can begin to recognise patterns in the way they think and respond to challenges. Greater self-awareness often leads to a better understanding of triggers, strengths, values, and emotional needs. Understanding ourselves is often the first step towards meaningful change.
Life includes difficult thoughts, emotions, stress, and uncertainty. The ACT Deck is designed to help people learn skills from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that encourage healthier ways of responding to these experiences. Rather than becoming stuck in struggle or avoidance, the cards help individuals develop psychological flexibility — learning to make space for difficult experiences while continuing to move towards what matters most. This can help build emotional resilience and improve overall wellbeing.
Many people find it difficult to know how to start conversations about mental health or personal challenges. The ACT Deck creates a simple and supportive way to open discussions and strengthen connections with ourselves and others. The cards encourage reflection, communication, and action by helping people identify values and consider small, meaningful steps forward. Sometimes a single question can create a new perspective, strengthen relationships, or inspire positive change.
